A Digital Postscript: Roger Smith #Cookbookconf Panel on Apps–Here Today, Where Tomorrow?

During this morning’s panel about cookbook apps at the Roger Smith Cookbook Conference, I spoke about some of the–as Dorie Greenspan put it–“nitty gritty” considerations for authors and agents when exploring app territory (read: financial and contractual implications). I worry, though, that the audience came away with a less hopeful worldview on apps, and that wasn’t our intention–just a realistic look at what is still a growing and evolving market. When we opened the floor to questions from the audience, we were asked, “What’s the point? Where’s the money?” GREAT question, and I wish we’d had more time to answer. So I’m making more time here. What’s the point? Where’s the money? The money is coming! I believe–I hope–that there will be a shift in value from volume (the number of recipes in an app) to the quality of the content in different forms and the functionality. I’m still excited about the new digital platforms emerging every day, and am optimistic–perhaps naively so–that we will see an app revenue model where content is valued for what it’s worth and not the 99c or less philosophy that dominated the AppStore. The next rumored device Apple could be unveiling is the iTV. Imagine now, what this new platform can mean for cookbook content, on demand, and portable between devices. It’s time to cook or bake, and a consumer buys and app to help them do so. They start with the iPhone and their shopping list, turn on the iTV in the kitchen while using the App to cook/bake and helpful videos, and then using the App on the iPad in their...

Effects Selected Region All of the effects described below apply only to the selected region. To mark the selected region you can either click and hold down on the wave window and drag the mouse or press and hold down the shift key while moving in the file. To select the entire file press Ctrl+A. If you do not have any region selected when accessing an effect, the entire waveform will be selected as default. Presets Some effects come with a series of options known as “Presets”. The idea behind presets is to save you having to fiddle around with the numbers, which is great if the numbers don’t mean a lot to you. Instead, you can just browse the preset list and select the option which best describes the effect you are trying to achieve. Previewing The result of applying certain effects can be previewed using the play button in the Effect dialog. If you modify the effect parameters while previewing the file, you should hear the changes taking place. For this to work properly, we recommend using either ASIO or DirectSound as your sound playback system. Amplify To ‘amplify’ is to increase the loudness or volume of the selected region. To make a part of the recording softer or louder, select it and then use the menu Effects -> Amplify. The volume is entered in percent (100 being no change, 50 being -6dB softer or 200 being +6dB louder). Normalize To ‘normalize’ is to adjust the volume so that the loudest peak is equal to (or a percentage of) the maximum signal that can be used in...
